At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in national projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these national projects.
