One Chinese court has handed down death sentences to several prominent members of an infamous Burmese organized crime group to execution as Beijing continues its efforts on fraudulent networks in Southeast Asian region.
Overall, twenty-one clan members and associates were found guilty of scams, murder, assault and additional crimes, stated a official document posted on the court website.
The group is among a few of syndicates that gained influence in the early 2000s and changed the underdeveloped remote area of the town into a profitable hub of casinos and red-light districts.
In recent years they turned to scams in which thousands of smuggled workers, many of them from China, are caught, harmed and forced to cheat others in criminal enterprises estimated at billions of dollars.
Syndicate boss the patriarch and his heir the younger Bai were included in the several figures given to execution by the judicial body. Yang Liqiang, A third figure and A fourth person were the additional punished.
Two members of the clan syndicate were received conditional death penalties. Five were given to permanent incarceration, while nine others were received prison terms between a period of 3-20 years.
This family, who controlled their own private army, set up 41 facilities to host their online fraud schemes and gambling houses, government stated.
These criminal enterprises included more than 29 billion yuan ($4.1 billion; £3.1bn). They also caused the fatalities of six Chinese citizens, the suicide of an individual and multiple assaults, official sources reported.
The harsh sentences issued by the judicial body are part of the Chinese campaign to eradicate the large fraud rings in the region - and send a stern warning to other illegal syndicates.
Such groups rose to power in the recent decades with the assistance of a military leader - who is in charge of the country's military government. The leader had wanted to prop up allies in Laukkaing after ousting its previous ruler.
Among the clans, the this family were "the top", Bai Yingcang previously told state media.
During that period, our Bai family was the dominant in each of the government and armed circles," he remarked in a report about the clan, aired on official channels in the summer.
In the same film, a employee at their their scam centres narrated the abuse he had suffered there: besides being hit, he had his fingernails extracted with instruments and two of his digits severed with a kitchen knife.
The son is among those who were sentenced to death this week. He has also been independently sentenced of planning to traffic and make 11 tonnes of narcotics, reports announced.
The families' end occurred in recent times as situations changed.
Previously Beijing has pressed the regime to control fraudulent operations in Laukkaing.
Recently, the law enforcement issued legal actions for the leading members of these groups.
The patriarch, the Bai family's head, was included in the figures who were extradited to Beijing from the country in the beginning of the year.
For what reason is the authorities making such extensive work to go after the groups?" a expert stated in the summer documentary.
"It's to warn individuals, no matter who you are, where you are, as long as you engage in such heinous acts affecting the nationals, you will pay the price."
