England to Launch UEFA Euro 2028 Journey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

The English squad will initiate their Euro 2028 campaign at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they achieve the relatively straightforward passage for a competition staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not staged an Three Lions match since the spring of 2016, when the Turkish team were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is highly likely to host the national team for their opening fixture on June 10, 2028.

England are planned to play their last two group stage games at the national stadium, but, if they top the preliminary round, their last-16 tie would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean beginning the playoffs at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Tournament Launch and Demonstration

The championship was unveiled at an gathering in central London on Wednesday evening. Senior figures from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were barracked as they approached the venue by around fifty protesters, who called for Israel’s national side to be removed from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.

Signs were raised with messages saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Event Timeline

The inaugural fixture of the tournament will be played at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a game that will feature the Welsh team if they make it.

Wembley Stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at late afternoon.

It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for Champions League finals from next season, will appeal to families and help engage a broader range of fans.

Qualifying Teams

The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their opening match at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would do the same at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the qualification process; two guaranteed slots will be held in reserve for any that do not reach the finals through that route.

Stadiums and Elimination Phase

Villa Park and The North London arena complete the event’s nine venues. Every stadium will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarter-finals held at the national stadium of each host.

The draw for the qualifiers will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a venue city last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.

Leadership Comment

“This will be a tournament for the fans and a festival of everything we value about the football – its emotion and power to unite individuals.”

Over 3 million admissions, a all-time high for a Euro tournament, are expected to be made available to fans.
