Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams revealed his intention to back former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned Cuomo, calling him a ā€œdeceptive figure and a liarā€ and accusing him of having ā€œa career of pushing Black candidates out of races.ā€ Yet, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams reversed course, announcing he now plans to campaign alongside Cuomo in communities where he holds significant backing.

ā€œI think that it is imperative to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have experienced urban displacement on how critical this race is,ā€ the mayor commented.

Adams continued, ā€œThey have watched their rents increase due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.ā€

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has attracted attention internationally and symbolized aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.

During a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee his conservative opponent declared they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Months ago, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dropped in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor responded to journalists asking about the support announcement by saying, ā€œI’ll be with Andrew later today.ā€

The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a heated candidate debate.
