Fury Erupts as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Backlash

Individuals from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the entertainment world are uniting to condemn former President Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Online Post

Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to social media to label the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Update and Arrest

Police have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was set at a significant sum.

A Torrent of Criticism from Public Figures

The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.

“What a disgusting and despicable comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the statements. Goldberg pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any worse?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from His Own Party

Some Republican elected officials also voiced disapproval.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also alluded to struggles with addiction and mental health within families.

Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged members in his party to defend the statements.

The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.

"We see autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."

Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence unequivocally after the killing of a different political figure.

An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
