Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he will decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.
"Yeah, I would be lying if I denied it," Newsom remarked when questioned about seriously considering a campaign for president following the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that."
The governor's time in office as governor concludes in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he noted that any decision is not imminent.
"It's up to destiny," he remarked.
The California governor has stepped forward as a notable adversary of the former president's team, using his social media accounts and advocating for a ballot measure that would expand the party's House seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has made him a target from critics.
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a recent appearance on Fox News. Duffy revealed plans to cut federal funds from the state and suggested suspending the authority to provide commercial driver's licenses.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," he declared, in the wake of a recent tragic collision in California involving an unauthorized trucker that resulted in loss of life and injured individuals.
His administration highlighted that the federal government had approved the individual's authorization multiple times, which enabled him to receive a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
Duffy had previously stated he was blocking $40 million from California for failing to implement linguistic standards for truck drivers.
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand national statutes," Newsom's office said in a recent release countering the funding warnings. "For now, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: The state's truck drivers had a death rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."
A this month's study found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters indicated that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has risen to an average of a third from around 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an typical level of over 40% to under 40%.
Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his future for 2028.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.
"The notion that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, amazing," he stated. "No one can say? I am eager to see who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
