A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country struggling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was attacked in the central business district on a Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the 40-year-old presenter was confronted by three individuals, one of whom opened fire on him before running away.

The reason behind the shooting has not been established and no arrests have taken place, according to authorities.

The Fatal Incident

Law enforcement said that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a building in the vicinity of the city center landmark.

He had been present for hours at the building overseeing the implementation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unidentified individuals, it was reported.

"It is alleged the man was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before fleeing the scene on foot," an official report said.

Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a individual with dreadlocks and clad in what looked like a protective services outfit firing shots on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but fell down on the opposite side of the road.

Officials noted that Stock had an weapon on his person and it was not a robbery during the attack.
