The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
