New Year's Revelers Urged to Wrap Up Warm with Snowfall Forecast Across the UK

Weather experts have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall expected over large parts of the UK. Revelers are being urged to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Go Ahead Amid Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to proceed, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

Readings Set to Drop Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Warnings Issued

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this signified the weather was expected to lead to major effects across the NHS and care systems. This involves a expected uptick in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
