New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities shared surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt were reported.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
