The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core policy, was not quick to announce this decision right away following his triumph in November.

"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the need to directing my complete efforts on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, it will always live within me and my work," he said.

A Contentious Issue

During his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he is from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for civic gatherings, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment very different than his humble Astoria home.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.

The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
