Alright, what did you think of the past year in your family? Did it seem entirely positive as one might claim on social media? Packed with top marks for the kids and wild costume celebrations for the parents? Or was it a sea of frustration with only rare fun moments? And was any of it authentic, or have we all become seven-fingered AI slop beings with perfect smiles?
I've assembled the family for a reflection, willing or unwilling, to reflect on the most important thing in any given year: what titles we played the most. Without further ado:
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"It’s not my games column."
On her phone, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "searching for decent healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In real life."
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He took umbrage that I even asked. Fair enough.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into theatre school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was playing Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her avatar has a successful utopia with significantly better healthcare than her eldest sister has in the real world.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at 60% completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Minecraft
Any time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he protests, I reply that I am doing this to prepare him so he can grow up and play games for adults. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is a machine. Superior than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that frequently update their range is you eventually realize and see it is all just an attempt to suck you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a legendary franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the off. I wish I could eviscerate my issues so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just didn’t have the time or headspace to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I will be playing this in the late night after family time.
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was last year's breakout game, but I was a late adopter. And it is remarkable. It just gets every single thing right. The core concept is a wonderful concept, but the powers behind the different special cards are so inventive it has become a game I could play at any hour. Throw in the charm of the card design, and this is an absolute peak of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a minor pile-on when I mentioned how a specific bug in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I valued even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the commenter who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I present that verbatim, because I acknowledge the engagement, and he is obviously an excellent judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a bastard-hard exploration-focused thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". How delightful. I get that it looks ace and is perfection if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my current stage of life. I was around back when many games were like this, and I'm over it. It was okay when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many less comfortable things.
Close call between business deals that sparked debate, and expensive game releases. Both difficult to justify and concerning.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all sound good names bellowed from the doorstep at bedtime.
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or phone use, but it burns like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the past.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the end of days.
The Witcher 4.
