American thespian and writer Jeremy O Harris, best known for the Tony-nominated production Slave Play, was detained in November at an international terminal in Japan on suspicion of attempting to smuggle controlled substances into the country, authorities announced.
The 36-year-old was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a customs officer found 0.78 grams of a crystalline substance containing the synthetic narcotic MDMA in his tote bag, according to a official statement.
He was promptly taken into custody on suspicion of breaching Japan’s strict Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.
Local customs officials filed a criminal accusation with the prosecutor’s office to commence legal action against the individual.
A police official in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, confirmed that Harris is still being held. The official declined to comment on whether Harris has acknowledged the allegations.
At this time, it is not known whether the figure has retained a defense attorney in Japan. Inquiries to his management team were not answered at once.
Authorities stated Harris had traveled to Okinawa for tourism, having traveled from Britain via a connecting flight in Taiwan. Okinawa is a popular resort destination south-west of Tokyo, known for its beaches and military installations.
Japan enforces some of the most severe drug laws among industrialized countries. Possession and smuggling even small amounts of illegal substances typically leads to legal proceedings.
International visitors detained by Japan for alleged drug offences in recent years include ex- Australian rugby league player Blake Ferguson in 2021. In a historic 1980 case, former Beatle Paul McCartney was detained after landing in Tokyo with marijuana and was afterwards banned from entering the country for years.
Beyond his stage writing, Jeremy O Harris is recognized for his performance in the series Emily in Paris and for producing the HBO drama Euphoria.
