Suspected Bondi Beach Attackers Operated Solo and Did Not Preparation in the Southeast Asian Nation, Authorities State.

The pair of accused gunmen responsible for the lethal incident at a Hanukkah gathering on Bondi Beach, that took 15 lives, are believed to have acted alone, according to Australian authorities.

Police further stated that Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram travelled to the Philippines on 1 November. Their itinerary included landing in the capital Manila before traveling onward that same day to Davao City. The pair returned to Sydney on 29 November.

Lack of Proof of Preparation During Stay

Authorities assert the duo did not partake in any type of attack-related coaching or "organizing" during their stay in the Philippines. Early findings from Philippine officials suggest they "mostly stayed in" their accommodation.

The incident—declared Australia's deadliest firearm massacre since 1996—has been formally declared a act of terrorism.

"Our teams are actively examining the evidence," the commissioner stated, explaining that early reviews show that "these individuals are alleged to have operated independently."

National law enforcement Commissioner Krissy Barrett informed the press on Tuesday that security camera video tracking the accused attackers' movements in the Philippines had been provided to domestic investigators.

"Our investigation shows no evidence to suggest these suspects were affiliated with a broader organization, or were acting on orders from others to perpetrate an act of violence," the police chief stated.

However, the pair were likewise not necessarily in the Philippines on a leisure trip, she clarified. She emphasized that, given that the probe is ongoing, new evidence might come to light.

In prior statements, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it appears both accused gunmen were "motivated by Islamic State" beliefs.

During the incident, Sajid Akram was killed by police. He and his son Naveed—reportedly carrying long-barrelled guns—allegedly opened fire on guests at the Jewish festival event.

Naveed Akram, who was wounded after the attack, has been formally accused of 59 charges. These include 15 charges of murder and one count of carrying out a act of terrorism. He is scheduled to appear in court in April.

In the wake following the shooting, border officials in the Philippines reported that the older suspect had entered the country using an Indian passport, while his younger suspect used an Australian passport.

The two had listed the southern city of Davao as their intended endpoint. Their booked return flight to Australia was for Sydney.

Davao is a large metropolis on the eastern side of Mindanao, the Philippines' primary southern island. The region is known because, Militant groups have been known to operate in impoverished parts of central and south-western Mindanao.
