A group of six quirky but resilient children confront the way of a vast and dreadful supernatural evil that has infiltrated our realm from the outer limits of oblivion. They have no choice but to wage a lifelong battle fighting it, facing horror after horror in the ordeal.

A Resonant Storyline with a New Approach

This outlines the narrative, in essence, of Stephen King’s seminal work It (his best; no debate). It parallels of Stephen King’s offspring Joe Hill’s latest horror doorstopper, in which six friends summon the age-old, deeply sinister beast the Dragon King from the Endless Night to assist them in vanquishing some villains. Unsurprisingly, their otherworldly invocation goes awry.

Embracing a Family Legacy

Joseph Hillström King began his writing journey going to great lengths to remain separate from his famous father, publishing under the pen name he maintains to this day and avoiding meeting his agent (he bears a uncanny likeness to his dad). Yet with this recent release, he leans into it. Several quotes that intentionally mirror some of the senior author’s well-known (that classic opening line); a moment that recalls a King plot point (a game of puzzles). In this epic story, Hill is delighting in his lineage, and we delight along with him.

Introducing the Main Characters

Returning to the group: the majority are pupils at the made-up this academic setting in Maine. There’s Arthur, academic and brilliant, cracking historical enigmas in his leisure hours; another key figure, rich, sharp, and prone to trampling anyone who stands in his way; Donna and Donovan; the attractive Allie. And there’s Gwen, who isn’t their classmate, but emerges as crucial of their circle as they dabble, somewhat credulous, somewhat doubtful, in supernatural practices.

The Critical Summoning

Arthur is, as a result of external pressures, forced into stealing valuable volumes from his cherished academic collection by a bunch of local criminals. This devastates his scholarly soul, especially when he’s made to take the institution’s prized and unsettling publication: the diary of practitioner Enoch Crane (put to death “for conspiring with dark forces in 1703”; the cover is made from his skin). These young investigators peruse the diary, realize they are able to call forth what the occultist details as a “arrogant beast to aid our hero with his extortion dilemma – and spend the rest of the novel enduring the repercussions. King Sorrow will undoubtedly remove those problematic neighborhood criminals, but they’ll have to choose a different victim annually or become his victim themselves. As our protagonist states: “You sow dragon’s teeth, all you get is additional horrors.”

Genre Dexterity and Creative Range

Covering a generation, Joe Hill transitions with effortless ease through various literary forms: as the companions strive to manage the situation they find themselves in by, in different ways, choosing undeniably wicked targets to offer up, or searching for methods to slay the beast themselves, we go from suspense to grim fantasy, clandestine torment to romance to terror. One particularly memorable shift was to a quest story, far beneath the surface below Cornwall, a part tinged by the Lord of the Rings author that was wonderfully frightening.

An Expansive Canvas of Fear and Optimism

There are trolls – bridge-dwelling ones and online ones, properly scary and perfectly brought to life. We see enchanted blades and treacheries, breath-taking moments of bravery and scenes of dreadful evil, both human and supernatural. It’s a tour de force: a horror novel that is above all a tribute to the imagination, and to devotion and companionship. “We longed for a tale to embrace and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says Colin as the allies assemble around a surface, making preparations to call forth their beast into being with the strength of their collective will.
