The King's Legendary Scoring Streak Comes to a Close, Yet Lakers Secure Victory Against Toronto.

LeBron James was aware his incredible run of scoring in double figures was in danger. In that crucial moment, however, he wasn't bothered.

The smart move involved passing the ball – so he did. With that selfless act, his remarkable run finished.

James's astounding run of over 1,200 straight NBA regular season double-digit scoring performances concluded on Thursday night, when basketball's greatest scorer had only eight points in the Lakers' 123-120 triumph versus Toronto. He made the game-winning assist, setting up teammate Rui Hachimura for a three-point shot at the buzzer.

“None,” James said in response regarding the conclusion of his run. “The important thing is we won.”

A Team-First Play Secures Victory

He might have attempted to win the contest – and extended his record – on the final possession, yet he opted to pass to Hachimura stationed in the corner. Hachimura sank it, with LeBron raised his arms triumphantly.

“Just playing the game the proper way. Always make the right play,” James remarked. That is how I operate. It's how I learned to play. That's what I've done my whole career.”

“LeBron is acutely aware of how many points he's scored at any point,” stated the team's head coach JJ Redick. He made the play just as he has countless times.”

The Streak's End Game

James re-entered the game for the final time with under five and a half minutes to go, the result and his personal record up for grabs. He had only six points on a 3-for-15 performance then.

He scored at under two minutes remaining to tie the game and missed a 14-footer with 1:01 left that would have taken him to double digits.

He passed up a subsequent shot – but could have. A teammate gave James the ball with a few seconds left, however, James opted to make the extra pass instead.

The basketball deities, if you do it correctly, they tend to bless you,” Redick added.

The History of an Unparalleled Record

This incredible run began over eighteen years ago. It was, by far the most extended such streak the league has ever seen: Michael Jordan previously held a streak of 866 straight games with 10+ points, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787 such games, and Karl Malone was fourth on the list at 575.

“He’s such a pass-first superstar,” said Lakers center Jake LaRavia.

He simply plays the game of basketball. He could have shot but given his nature as a player and his personality as an individual, he made the team play, passed it to Rui and claimed the victory.”

Scoring in double figures had typically been an afterthought early in the final period. Over the course of the record, he had achieved ten points entering the fourth over twelve hundred times before this game.

Yet two such games below ten points through three quarters had occurred just days before: He recorded nine entering the final quarter versus the Mavericks on 28 November, then had six before the fourth quarter against Phoenix earlier in the week.

LeBron was able to extend the streak against the Suns. One game later, it finished – but he still rejoiced all the same.

“I always just make the best play. That’s automatic, win, lose or draw,” James declared. “You make the unselfish play, the game gods forever returning the favor.”
