The British and French governments have signed a declaration of intent concerning the stationing of armed personnel in the nation in the event a ceasefire be struck with Russia, the Prime Minister of Britain, Keir Starmer, has declared.
Following talks with Kyiv's partners in the French capital, he said that the allies would "set up military hubs across Ukraine and construct secure installations for military hardware and military equipment" to deter any subsequent incursion.
The coalition members also proposed that the United States would take the lead in monitoring a ceasefire.
Moscow has on multiple occasions cautioned that any non-Ukrainian military in Ukraine would be considered a "acceptable aim", but has as yet not responded on this recent announcement.
The Kremlin's head Vladimir Putin began a comprehensive attack of Ukraine in early 2022, and Moscow currently holds roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory.
"This is a vital part of our commitment to be alongside Ukraine for the long-term," remarked Starmer.
National leaders and senior officials from the "Allied Coalition" were involved in Tuesday's talks.
He stated at a combined announcement, the Prime Minister noted: "It creates the pathway for the legal framework under which British, French, and partner forces could function on the ground in Ukraine, protecting Ukraine's airspace and waters, and restoring Ukraine's defense capabilities for the years ahead."
The UK prime minister added that Britain would take part in any Washington-directed confirmation of a potential ceasefire.
Top US negotiator Steve Witkoff stated that "durable security guarantees and robust reconstruction vows are essential to a lasting peace" in Ukraine – alluding to a key requirement made by Ukraine.
He indicated the allies had "mostly completed" their work on finalizing such guarantees "so that the people of Ukraine know that when this hostilities ends, it ends for good."
The former US envoy, US President Donald Trump's representative, also was involved in the discussions.
At the same time, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Ukraine's partners had made "major progress" at the talks.
He added that "strong" security guarantees for Ukraine had been reached in the instance of a potential ceasefire.
Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky stated that a "significant development" had been made in the negotiations, but qualified that he would only deem efforts to be "adequate" if they led to the end of the war.
Recently, the Ukrainian leader said a peace agreement was "mostly finalized". Agreeing on the remaining 10% would "determine the fate of peace, the future of Ukraine and Europe".
Russian forces currently occupies approximately 75% of the Donetsk oblast and some 99% of the neighbouring Luhansk region. The pair of oblasts form the industrial region of Donbas.
The original US-led multi-point peace plan that was widely leaked to the media last year was seen by Kyiv and its EU supporters as being heavily skewed in Moscow's direction.
This triggered a period of focused discussions – with Ukraine, the US and European leaders trying to revise the draft.
Recently, The Ukrainian government presented the US an new proposal – as well as additional documents describing potential defense assurances and arrangements for Ukraine's recovery, the President added.
