Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
